The University’s origins may be traced to the School of Medicine and Surgery (later the College of Medicine), which was founded in 1834, and the College of Physical Science (later called Armstrong College), which was formed in 1871. The more significant part of the federal University of Durham was created by these two colleges, with the Durham Colleges comprising the other. In 1937, the Newcastle institutions combined to establish King’s College. King’s College was renamed the University of Newcastle in 1963.
